Lesson 1: Concept Development Lesson

  • To develop understanding of the concept of scale.
  • To understand how changes in scale can affect properties and interactions.

In this lesson, a video clip from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is used as a stimulus for a discussion of scale. The Taba Concept Development Model is used to develop the concept of scale.

Students develop generalizations for the concept of scale:
  1. There is a wide range of sizes in the natural world; All measurable quantities have large ranges.
  2. The way things work may change with scale.
  3. The rules of behavior in the natural world are different in other scales (atomic, nano, micro, macro).
  4. The same actions can have different outcomes depending on scale.
